Old Britain

can a 17 year old from Britain travel alone or with friends outside Europe??
just was thinking of organizing a holiday ... but im not sure if im old enough to travel alone ... and what about things concerning travel insurance and everything??
I started travelling abroad with a friend at 17 although it was only within Europe and not outside like you plan. It depends on your maturity & independence as much as anything.
Yes you can get travel insurance (at least I could at that age) and it IS a smart thing especially if you are going further afield. You will be charged the same price as an adult if travelling without an adult, and may have to shop about as not all companies will offer it to under 18, but it is definately possible and certainly advisable
Same goes for booking accomodation, it is smart to arrange in advance so you are sure that age won't be a problem, and they may also require you to pay in advance also, but in principle shouldn't be a problem
If you are not sure then stick within Europe until next year and then you are sure that at 18 you can travel without any problems

Britain (Name) $73.28 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The name Britain is derived from the Latin name Britannia (earlier Brittannia), via Old French Bretaigne (whence also Modern French Bretagne) and Middle English Bretayne, Breteyne. The French form replaced Old English Breoton, Breoten, Bryten, Breten (also Breotonlond, Bretenlond). The Latin term derives from the Greek forms Prettanike or Brettaniai, which originally referred to a collection of islands with individual names, including Albion, the oldest known name for Great Britain (see British Isles). By the 1st century BC Britannia was often used to refer to Great Britain specifically. This transference was further solidified by the Roman conquest and the subsequent establishment of the Roman province of Britannia, which eventually came to encompass the part of the island south of Caledonia (roughly, Scotland). The Battle of Britain $106.74 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Battle of Britain was the fourth of Frank Capras Why We Fight series. It was released in 1943 and concentrated on the German bombardment of the United Kingdom in anticipation of Operation Sealion during the Second World War. During the World War II and immediately after it, in addition to the many private films created to help the war effort, many Allied countries had governmental or semigovernmental agencies commission propaganda and training films for home and foreign consumption. Animated films will be reserved for a future list. Frank Russell Capra (May 18, 1897 September 3, 1991) was a Sicilianborn American film director and a creative force behind a number of films of the 1930s and 1940s, including It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Lost Horizon (1937), You Cant Take It With You (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Meet John Doe (1941), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) and Its a Wonderful Life (1946). Atlas of Epidemic Britain (Hardcover) $672.65 Over a hundred years have passed since Charles Creighton`s A History of Epidemics in Britain was published. Then, epidemics of infectious diseases accounted for a third of all deaths in the British Isles, caused principally by familiar infections like measles, whooping cough, scarlet fever, and smallpox, as well as by a host of now unfamiliar conditions in Britain like plague, cholera and typhus. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, mortality from infectious diseases had dropped to less than one in ten thousand of all deaths. But an invidious change had been taking place. Many of the old infectious diseases had been pushed into retreat by improvements in health care, delivered for three generations by a National Health Service, socio-economic progress, and medical advances - particularly mass vaccination which caused morbidity and mortality from a series of vaccine-preventable infections to implode. The vacuum generated was filled not just by cancers and cardio-vascular conditions. To add to the mix, infectious disease morbidity and mortality began to increase again, caused by a complex mixture of apparently new pathogens like bird flu, swine flu, variant Creutzfeld-Jacob disease (vCJD), Escherichia coli O157:H7, HIV, and hospital-based infections. Using over 300 new maps, charts, photographs and associated text, this full-colour Atlas views a century of change - the ebb and flow of infection - in Britain`s epidemic landscape. It maps and interprets the complex time-space tapestry woven in twentieth century Britain by the uneven retreat of some infectious diseases, the emergence of new infections and the re-emergence of certain historical plagues. In each chapter, representative maps are accompanied by micrographs of the biological agents of the diseases mapped, illustrations of the environments in which they occur, the impacts they have had, and the pioneers who unravelled their complex life and death cycles. The accompanying text summarize |

Britain Begins (Hardcover) $97.38 The ancient Celts believed they were descended from Father Dis (Dis Pater), a god of the dead who resided in the west where the sun set. Today, ideas of our prehistoric origins are more likely based on ocean core samples, radio-carbon dating, and archeological artifacts. But as Barry Cunliffe reminds us in Britain Begins, an archaeologist writing of the past must be constantly aware that the past is, in truth, unknowable. Like the myth-making Celts, we too create stories about our origins, based on what we know today. Cunliffe here offers readers a vision of both worlds, looking at new myths and old, as he tells the fascinating story of the origins of the British and the Irish, from around 10,000 BC to the eve of the Norman Conquest. Using the most up-to-date archaeological evidence together with new work on DNA and other scientific techniques which help us to trace the origins and movements of these early settlers, Cunliffe offers a rich narrative account of the first islanders--who they were, where they came from, and how they interacted with one another. Underlying this narrative is the story of the sea, and Cunliffe paints a fascinating picture of early ships and sails and of the surprising sophistication of early navigation. The story told by the archaeological evidence is enhanced by historical texts, such as Julius Caesar`s well-known if rather murky vision of Britain. Equally interesting, Cunliffe looks at the ideas of Britain`s origins formed by our long-ago ancestors themselves, when they used what scraps there were, gleaned from Biblical and classical texts, to create a largely mythological origin for the British. |
