Brown Stoneware Question on the number 36 written in script on the bottom of a pitcher. What does it stand for?
I have a brown handled pitcher, I believe it is stoneware or perhaps pottery. The number on the bottom is written in old english script. It is not for the amount that it holds. There are not other makers mark on it. Any ideas as to what that 36 might stand for? Thank you.
I do not know the age of this pitcher.
There are a couple options ... but marks differ from potter to potter. Unfortunately, with so many variances in makers marks, only the true meaning is known to the potter himself. That said, however, the are it has some connection with the studio in which it was manufactured, or *most* likely it was part of a series and yours was the 36th pitcher thrown in that particular batch. You can't count on it being that manufacturer b/c while that is what was historically put on the bottom of works, not every artist does that.

Can you tell me anything about bowls made by Evelyn Strongbole? How old? are they worth anything?
I got the bowl from an estate, but don't know if its old or just looks old. It looks like glazed stoneware. The glaze is dark brown.
I'm no expert, but i'll tell you what:
1. The lack of information on the internet points to at least a slightly old bowl. A modern artist would have a website or be listed somewhere.
2. If you can find out about the history of the estate, maybe you can learn about the time period or bowl specifically.
3. Obviously, if you find anything, worth depends on condition age and rarity.

If you want a purple just addCobalt Carbonate .6 otherwise leave it out for the Raspberry. If you fire cone ^5 with slow cool that 500 F from cone to 1900 and than 125F to 1400 you should be able to get a nice MATT RASPBERRY on both white and brown stoneware. If an electric kiln automatic slow you might get the nice glossy at cone ^6. And if you dip first Raspeberry than Vareigated slate Blue on top (cool color but more of the white/cream you are talking about. Hope that helps

Holly try this glaze if you can mix a batch to test for another version of the Raspberry. It's Jeannie's purple minus the cobalt carbonate.
Gerstley Borate 21.o
Nephineel Syenite 16.0
Kaolin EPK 11.0
Whiting 20.0

Add
Tin Oxide 5.0
Chromium Oxide 0.2
