Socially, I am completely inept, and must learn all things at the intellectual level. Intuition seems to have passed me by.
I'm 36 year old female, I don't drink, smoke, or take drugs. I'm a redneck with a poor home, so I don't need to know anything about salad forks or china. We'll likely be eating off disposable plates with plastic ware. It's behaviour and speech I need help with, mainly.
This is the situation I need basic ettiquette for:
Having a friend over to my house for dinner. Need to know basic behaviour and speech from the moment they walk through the door, to the time they decide to leave.
It will hurt my heart if I make them feel uncomfortable, or creep them out. This is mostly what I am trying to avoid.
Any serious answers are appreciated, whether they prove to be helpful or not.

Just play the evening by ear.
If you are worried about what to talk about, watch the news and a decent current affairs programme a couple of days before the dinner to see what is going in the world at the moment. Talk about this at the dinner.
Also, people generally love talking about themselves. Ask your friend questions about what they love to do in their spare time/hobbies, their plans for the future, etc. I'm not sure how you know this person, but talk about whatever links you together i.e. university? work? etc.
Unless you are very competent in the kitchen, do NOT under any circumstances cook something for dinner that you haven't tried before! Do one of your tried and true recipes, possibly a casserole or something that you can cook beforehand. That way you won't stress yourself out with being stuck in the kitchen.
