I have a toothbrush with a plate of real silver located below the bristles?
what are the benefits or having the silver plate below the bristles? My uncle said something about helping to fight cavities, but can anyone elaborate?
Silver has long been used as a disinfectant. Pioneer folks would drop a silver dollar in a jug of milk to keep it fresh longer. Silver is the active ingredient in the "silver drops" put in babies eyes, and in the burn ointment, "Silver Sulfadiazine". It's used to purify the water on the space station.
Dr. Robert Becker, in his book "The Body Electric", tells how he discovered that there was never any bacterial infection near the silver electrodes he used in his experiments on animals, and he used silver in various forms with great success in treating bone infections, which are very hard to treat due to lack of blood supply.
Sounds like you have a pretty nice toothbrush there...I suspect the silver kills any bacteria on it, and perhaps some silver is released when using it.
The old expression "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" was from the practice of the rich to give a child a silver spoon to suck on, to ward off illness. People who ate off silver plates with silver utensils during the plague did not contract it as offen as others, perhaps due to the anti-microbial effect of the silver.

Silver plate, antique nurse belt buckle with blue swastikas on it?
My mum has a silver plate antique nurses buckle. It is kind of filigree design with a light blue swastika on each half. She got it from her sister who is a nurse. She was given it years ago by an old matron, who said it was worn by jewish nurses. If anyone knows anything about this kind of thing, or a good site online that I would be able to find anything about this, please let me know. Thank you!
I can not find anything (on a brief research) regarding its use within Judaism, though I know that it was used in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Wikipedia have a good article concerning the symbol itself. Whether or not Jewish nurses were forced to wear the symbol during Nazi periods in Europe, I do not know. However, if you are really determined to find the origin and provenance of the piece you could contact the Holocaust Museum in America (google it) or the Imperial War Museum in London.
Finally, you could of course try one of these 'what is it, and how much is it worth' programmes on telly (like Antiques Roadshow) but I am sure you will get help from a curator of a museum or academic. You may also be asked to donate the item for an exhibition, which may or may not offer payment.
