This work traces the history of pottery and porcelain from early times down to the Philadelphia Exhibition of 1876. What the author attempts to do in this book is to gather and present, in a way to be easily understood, the most important facts relating to pottery and porcelain. The study of this interesting subject has for more than a century been constant in Europe. A correct knowledge of it may now almost be called a liberal education. In the United States something has been done; and the public mind is now asking, What is it that makes pottery and porcelain so attractive to scholars, statesmen, women, and wits? In some degree, this work answers this question. Illustrated. Author: Elliott, Charles Wyllys Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 364 Publication Date: 2003/07/01 Language: English Dimensions: 11.00 x 8.25 x 0.75 inches
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Pottery is the ceramic ware made by potters. Major types of pottery include earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. The places where such wares are made are called potteries. Pottery is one of the oldest human technologies and artforms, and remains a major industry today. Ceramic art covers the art of pottery, whether in items made for use or purely for decoration. Pottery is made by forming a clay body into objects of a required shape and heating them to high temperatures in a kiln to induce reactions that lead to permanent changes, including increasing their strength and hardening and setting their shape. An illustrated guide to pottery and porcelain collectibles features more than 10,200 individual listings covering all the major collectible categories of English, European, Asian, and American ceramics from the 18th century to the late 20th century.
This book features photographs of marks alongside their actual pieces for perspective. Other books simply show line drawings, but this massive encyclopedia educates collectors and researchers on what the marks actually look like on a piece of pottery or porcelain. Over 7,500 photographs of around 4,000 marks and items, from Abingdon to Zsolnay, are featured in this huge publication. Organized alphabetically by company, this book is the most user-friendly marks book you`ll find, telling readers quickly what it looks like, when it was made, and who made it. Appraisers and dealers will find this guide extremely useful; they can learn a little bit about many different marks, rather than having to weed through extensive historical information on the thousands of marks produced. As an added feature, cross-referencing indexes are provided, by date, shape, and company.
Shows and identifies more than thirty-five hundred American, European, and Oriental trademarks for porcelain and pottery and indicates period of use for each mark

NTV7: 1000 years of pottery. Part 2.
Does having "England" make a piece of pottery or porcelain older than 1910?
I thought that having "England" rather than "Made in England" ment it as a certain age?
No it doesn't although it is true that just the word "England" was used from the late 1800's to designate the country of origin and the "Made in England" came a little later but you will see pieces now with just the word "England" and yet they were made in very recent times. I have never heard of a prosecution for using the wrong words and providing it is stated where things comes from the authorities overlook it. It is an old law.
