Ridge Southern How well does a hoop house work in the shadow of a mountain?
I'm thinking of buying a property that lies on a 15% grade facing to the north, in Pennsylvania. There is a mountain ridge to the south that blocks out 18 degrees of the southern sky.
Is this orientation likely to be a serious impediment to getting productivity in vegetables from the hoop house? Or for other plants grown outside the greenhouse, for instance, plums?
The soil is deep and well drained.
I do not actually understand those numbers very well. But if u get 6 or more hours of sunlight a day, the stuff will grow okay.
My plum tree does not take freeze well. i have only got plums one year out of 8 that i have noticed. my area is not as cold as yours i am pretty sure. Other varieties may be different since that is how it is for most fruit trees; some varieties will be able to tolerate different cold than others.
here is a cold climate gardening place; forum, info and links:

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. In peak bagging terminology in the United States, the Southern Sixers refers to the group of mountains in the southern states of North Carolina and Tennessee with heights of at least six thousand feet (1829 m). The southern sixers are the tallest group of mountains in the eastern United States and the only peaks in the Appalachian Mountains besides New Hampshires Mount Washington to exceed 6,000 feet. Most of these mountains are located in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (abbreviated GSMNP in the list), Mount Mitchell State Park (MMSP), along the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP), or in Cherokee or Pisgah National Forest. There are several, though, that are located on private property. All of these mountains are located within 32 miles (51 km) of the North Carolina Tennessee border, with 12 on the state border itself and many more on various county borders. The Blue Ridge, or Blue Ridge Mountains, is a physiographic province of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. This province consists of northern and southern physiographic regions, which divide near the Roanoke River gap. The mountain range is located in the eastern United States, starting at its southernmost portion in Georgia, then ending northward in Pennsylvania. To the west of the Blue Ridge, between it and the bulk of the Appalachians, lies the Great Appalachian Valley, bordered on the west by the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian range. The Blue Ridge Mountains are noted for their bluish color when seen from a distance. Trees put the blue in Blue Ridge, from the isoprene released into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the characteristic haze on the mountains and their distinctive color. Within the Blue Ridge province are two major national parks: the Shenandoah National Park in the northern section and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the southern section.
