Old Royal
I am 29 years old and want to join the Royal Navy, can you help?
I realise that I am not too old to join as a rating. However, I was wondering if it is quite unusual for somebody of my age to join? Will I fit in? I am a graduate but too old to join as an officer, though that doesn´t bother me at all.
In addition I am quite unfit, but looking to join ASAP - what fitness techniques would you recommend? I am considering going hill walking and jogging.
At your age you get, if memory serves, eleven minutes to run a mile and a half on flat ground. This is the standard RNFT, along with the Bleep Test, which I avoided like the plague.
Have a word with your local recruiting office. They'll have the up to date info, mine's not exactly current. I've been out for a year.
What worked for me prior to joining was running. Miles. And more miles. I tend to run for a length of time, not distance. That way I can judge my fitness level by how far I've run in half an hour. But anything that gets your heart going and a bit of a sweat up will do it. Cycling's excellent for it. So's swimming. The fitness test at Raleigh, unless its changed, covers sit ups, press ups and star jumps... they're not allowed to call them maggots any more.... Pity. Used to do rope climbing too, but that's been binned.
Twenty nine's not as odd as you think. I was twenty eight when I did it. Just expect nicknames at Raleigh along the lines of 'Pops,' 'Grandad,' or, my personal favourite, 'Nearly Dead.'
And if you do get in, ask to get drafted to 23's. They're the best ships in the fleet at the moment. Small enough to be friendly, big enough to be reasonably comfortable. Although the 45's will undoubtedly be better in the future, you couldn't get a better start than a 23. I've been on the carriers, a 42 and a 23. The 23 was undoubtedly my favourite.
