I wash mine whenever I get something on them, or whenever I decide it's time. Just done all the Christmas-themed ones and Christmas dish towels today, in preparation for storage.

How can I make an oragami project usable?
I've made a couple of really cool bowls and pot stands (trivets) out of paper and would like to make them usable as gifts for my family. What can I use on them that will make them hard, but won't melt when a hot pan is placed on them? I'm also concerned about things like Elmer's glue affecting the color. Any thoughts?
It seems like there are 2 parts to your question.
First part: making the paper usable. For this, you can use Mod Podge. They have SEVERAL different formulas... including a paper formula (which might work) or you could use the outdoor formula which is supposed to be the strongest. However, Mod Podge is not heat resistant. SO... I suggest you to go your local Home Depot and look in the paint/sealer/glue section and see what you can find there. These products are intended for more industrial purposes... and you should be able to find something that will not only harden your project... but make it heat resistant. Obviously, I would give yourself a few "trial" pieces that you won't care that they get messed up to test on
