Pfaltzgraff Stoneware What is the oily stuff coming out of my Pfaltzgraff stoneware?
I noticed some of my new stoneware dinner plates were not drying properly in the dishwasher and out of curiosity placed them in a hot oven for a few minutes. To my surprise, they were 'sweating' an oily liquid and after a few more minutes they looked as if you burned cheese in them. Very weird. I noticed that some fine dark veins on the glaze, disappeared after this heat treatment.. The liquid being sweated out was coming out through these veins. After putting them through dishwasher again, they noy come out clean and dry. What could it be?
It sounds a bit like some of the homemade pottery my daughter brings home from college before its been washed. I wonder if it was properly baked in the kiln. I would try washing them by hand with hot, soapy water and something rough, like a scotch brite. If they still are "sweating", not water proof, or imparts a funny taste on the food, it I would take them back to the store.
It sounds like they may be porous and thats not good if you going to eat off them on a daily basis. Are you sure these were meant to be used as dinner plates and aren't meant to be decorative? (i.e., plate liners or just to look at).
If you decide to keep them, you may want to check for lead. Its a long shot but lead poisoning is nasty stuff.

I believe they had discovered her and her brother's remains in another grave pit a few months ago, although tests are still being performed. There were some debates whether it was Anastasia's remains or her sister Maria's remains that were found in 1991, however, since all eleven remains are found now, it is only a question of which sister it belongs to.
In 1991, bodies believed to be those of the Imperial Family and their servants were finally exhumed from a mass grave in the woods outside Yekaterinburg. Once opened, the excavators realized that instead of eleven sets of remains the grave held only nine. Alexei and Anastasia's bodies were missing from the family's grave.
On August 23, 2007, a Russian archaeologist announced the discovery of two burned, partial skeletons at a bonfire site near Yekaterinburg that appeared to match the site described in Yurovsky's memoirs. The archaeologists said the bones are from a boy who was roughly between the ages of ten and thirteen years at the time of his death and of a young woman who was roughly between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three years old. Anastasia was seventeen years, one month old at the time of the assassination, while her sister Maria was nineteen years, one month old and her brother Alexei was two weeks shy of his fourteenth birthday. Anastasia's elder sisters Olga and Tatiana were twenty-two and twenty-one years old at the time of the assassination. Along with the remains of the two bodies, archaeologists found "shards of a container of sulfuric acid, nails, metal strips from a wooden box, and bullets of various caliber." The bones were found using metal detectors and metal rods as probes. Tests are still being conducted on the remains to determine whether they are the remains of the two missing Romanov children.
